Solid Bronze

Solid Bronze returns with their groove-based, psychedelicly-tinged, jazz-informed hazy-funk for their sophomore album, Mt. Fuji.

Hot off the heels of their debut, The Fruit Basket, founding members bassist/songwriter Ian Everett and drummer/percussionist George Miller pieced together a live band that had just began to get itself rolling when the Covid-19 pandemic sent the world into a lockdown spiral. After a few months the band (safely) took to Everett’s home studio to begin recording a new project in June of 2020.

Now featuring guitarist Tommy Heutmaker, saxophonist Mark Gallagher and keyboardist Eric Johnson, the music sounds more like a band than a collective, with all members contributing and writing. Some material had been worked out live and some created from nothing in the studio but the album’s six songs play as the same moment in time, influenced by the political and social pandemonium of the final six months of a tumultuous year.

Musically the benchmarks of the band’s sound is heard; locked in rhythm section, melodic sax lines and sleek guitar but new influence from electronic realms like house and ambient music are present as well, offering a brand new space and scenery for Solid Bronze to exist. As an album, Mt. Fuji offers less of a sequel to its predecessor and more a reimagining of the band itself.
